Love Story - American Bedroom Journal #2 / by Barbara Peacock

The destination is Farmington, Maine where I will meet my friend Tina's aunt and uncle, Rita and Bertrand, better known as Memere and Pepere.

They have been married for 61 years and are now sadly separated. Memere has recently been transfered to reside in a nursing home about 10 miles away. Everyday Pepere puts on his Sunday best and visits her.

They pass the time very sweetly.

Their's is a true love story of kindness and patience.

It's hard to leave but she is in good hands and Pepe assures her he'll be back tomorrow.

At Pepe's house he makes us his specialty, crepes!

Pepe shows me his bedroom and sits in contemplation and anticipation of the evenings lonliness.

'When I am in bed I still think she is there so when I get up I am quiet not to wake her. Then I forget that she is not there.'

'When I am in bed I still think she is there so when I get up I am quiet not to wake her. Then I forget that she is not there.'

The drive home is full of big beautiful barns, ice fishing and clean blue light. My thoughts go to Pepere and Memere and how their lives are ending apart. I think about how strong their love and devotion is, and how that love fills their hearts, keeping them from being entirely alone.
