American Bedroom - Whole lotta Love in Westbrook by Barbara Peacock

One of the things I find so fascinating about this project is that each experience is so completely different.  Not disimilar to opening a mysterious gift.

Each scene unravels with the newnest of the people, the place and the light. Often I do a location scout and check the light. That is what I was doing this day although that changed when I walked in the door and saw the whole family, bathed in morning light, sitting on the couch plaing video games and watching TV.  I said, ' Mary, I think I'd like to just shoot.' She was very genrous and said that was fine.

Sunday morning.

Sunday morning.

I heard there was a turtle in the bathroom...

...and hampsters

and a few cats...

...and a dog.....

...and a dog.....

The girls showed me their room and then wanted to braid their Mom's hair. I began to notice how very sweet the girls were and how much love they have for their Mom.

Meanwhile Jr was anxious to show me his room which was in the livingroom closet.

Meanwhile Jr was anxious to show me his room which was in the livingroom closet.

Next stop was Mom's bedroom where everyone just plunked right in. The kids just showered Mom with hugs and kisses...and everyone wanted her for their own. I was touched by how affectionate they all were and clearly how much the kids adore her.

The kids all collect Magic cards and they were very excited to show me their favorites!

It wasn't too long before boyhood took over.

It all ended back at the TV.

Ya, just a smidge of danger with this one!!

Parting shots. They had fun and want me to come back!

See you all soon!!

The Girls Upstairs model a Plumnyc Tutu by Barbara Peacock

I went upstairs to hang out with the girls and brought up a tutu from Plumnyc. Each girl was excited to try it on and do their thing. Avey was up first.

The best things are always unplanned - Belle went for a drink of water....

That tuned into a little  'watering the plants' shoot.

Only Belle and I know how much water spilled all over. We'll never tell.

And then Stryder came to see what was up....Thank you Stryder!

Love Story - American Bedroom Journal #2 by Barbara Peacock

The destination is Farmington, Maine where I will meet my friend Tina's aunt and uncle, Rita and Bertrand, better known as Memere and Pepere.

They have been married for 61 years and are now sadly separated. Memere has recently been transfered to reside in a nursing home about 10 miles away. Everyday Pepere puts on his Sunday best and visits her.

They pass the time very sweetly.

Their's is a true love story of kindness and patience.

It's hard to leave but she is in good hands and Pepe assures her he'll be back tomorrow.

At Pepe's house he makes us his specialty, crepes!

Pepe shows me his bedroom and sits in contemplation and anticipation of the evenings lonliness.

'When I am in bed I still think she is there so when I get up I am quiet not to wake her. Then I forget that she is not there.'

'When I am in bed I still think she is there so when I get up I am quiet not to wake her. Then I forget that she is not there.'

The drive home is full of big beautiful barns, ice fishing and clean blue light. My thoughts go to Pepere and Memere and how their lives are ending apart. I think about how strong their love and devotion is, and how that love fills their hearts, keeping them from being entirely alone.

'The road to Sweden' - American Bedroom Journal #1 - by Barbara Peacock

Driving by the light of the moon in the early hours of the morning on the backroads of Maine to Sweden. No street lights or any sign of life. I am hoping to see a deer. I always think it is so magical.

sweden travels-1208.jpg

Instead, at the top of a hill in a vast clearing I see a long row of birch trees welcoming me to the first glimpe of the sunrise.

The crisp cold greats me as I walk in the middle of the road relishing in the hush of the waking day.

I arrive at my location recogizing the description of the red gun shell mail box. Hopefully my subject Casie told her Dad no friendly fire to greet this early visitor!

The cabin is warm and I am greeted by three deer and Gene Hackman.

Casie makes us French Press coffee and we are ready to shoot.

Cassie's room is on the second floor and has one very small window, which I am pretty excited about. I love playing with a small source of light. Her mornings start by waking up and playing with her dog Ruby, a pit/boxer mix. Her sleep wear of choice is tank tops, so we start with a black one.

We start with a test - The light is quite nice. It emits just enough to fall on Cassie and Ruby as well as hitting the ceiling and bureau. Ruby wants all the attention and is playful at first. I decide to change Cassie into a dark pink tank top.

Ruby settles down and Cassie checks her mail. This is the natural moment of a typical routine I am looking for. I am cramped up against the wall. I can hardly move in this tight space. A 24mm is the widest lens I have so it just has to do. My big bulky tripod is really cramping my style but it allows me to make some nice long exposures and play with the light.

Casie  - ' I have recently moved back to Maine from the Southwest. I feel like my room is of the minimalistic kind. There are treasures scattered around. Totems, photographs and memories. I sleep in the middle of my bounty; much like a guarding dragon. I live with my father who supports me in all my endevors. My room is architecturally under the same "A" frame roof as my dad with plywood floors and a single lightbulb. I wake up everyday in my inner child's familar realm. It is a great way for me to honor who I was and excel at who I am becoming.'

Betsy was eager to show me her drawings and her dolls. She used to draw pin-up girls for boys when she was younger. She said the boys would erase the clothing off!

Bestsy asks if it would be alright for her to smoke. It seems that some people still smoke in their homes.

We invite Betsy to join us for breakfast but she declines. She askes me to vist again which I assure her I will.

There is one spot in town to eat - 'Rosie's. It's is a classic diner, small market and the local hang. The town of Sweden is very small - approx 350 people. I mention to Casie that I didn't see a town sign on my drive up. She thinks she knows where there is one so after breakfast we take a little drive around the town, only to find out the town of Sweden is so small they don't even have a sign...or at least one we couldn't find.
